Book 22: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (2006)

I’m sorry, but after reading the first five chapters of this greatly overrated book (would people insist on finishing it if it weren’t written by the Omniscient Richard Dawkins?), I had to put it down. I still have a stack of presumably worthwhile books to read, and I don’t want to waste my time on this 300+ pages junk.

I haven’t read any of the books that Dawkins has written and I’m certainly not impressed by this one. I honestly expected something more, ah, sophisticated from a famous intellectual like him. I expected to be blown away and for every argument to go over my head. Yet that didn’t happen. His writing style uncannily resembles mine: childish and self-indulgent. I now see why a lot of people consider this “a rant.” He also must have thought that he’s a very funny guy. He isn’t (neither am I, but at least I try not to be downright arrogant or obnoxious). If there’s anything worse than reading something boring, it’s reading something from someone who tries to be funny, who also fails.

I suppose there is a reason he is a biologist and not a theologian. I am by no means an expert in theology, but I know enough to realize that his understanding of God and the supernatural is deep as puddle. The difference between me and Dawkins is this: he’ll never admit his ignorance in favor of patting himself on the back because he is, of course, unquestionably right. After all, 98% of the atheists who read this book will readily worship this book. He must be doing something right.
